Historian Ras Benji delves into the extraordinary, intertwining lives and complex relations between two of the individuals featured in Tavares Strachan’s art.

Emperor Haile Selassie I and Marcus Garvey – two key figures in the modern history of Africa and its diaspora – are sources of personal and artistic inspiration to Tavares Strachan. Portraits of both figures feature in his Hayward Gallery exhibition.

Ras Benji MSE (Member of the Order of the Star of Ethiopia) is a researcher/historian of Emperor Haile Selassie I. He is also the Operations Manager of the Emperor’s former home in Britain, Fairfield House in Bath – a diverse community hub and heritage landmark. Benji often conducts the guided tour around the house and grounds of the Victorian villa for visitors, sharing his research about the lives of the Emperor and the Ethiopian royal family while they lived in Britain.
