Poet Ben Norris

Ben Norris leads this interactive online session, outlining the techniques of erasure poetry and how it can provide a way in to another piece of writing.

Perfect for newcomers and seasoned writers alike, erasure poems take an existing text – be it a news article, a novel, a health and safety notice, or an email from Domino’s Pizza – and build themselves out of the words that are already there.

Norris explains different ways into this approach, and different uses it can be put to, from generating new ideas to giving writers a way into another piece of work which is proving a struggle.

He believes there is freedom in limitation, and much humour, pathos and fresh perspective to be found here.

It is being held ahead of the launch of the Southbank Centre’s New Poets Collective in October this year. Poets of all levels of experience are welcome.

With generous support from the TS Eliot Foundation.

Ben Norris is a writer and performer, and twice a UK poetry slam champion. He has published two pamphlets of poetry, and toured internationally with his solo spoken-word theatre show, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Family, which won the IdeasTap Underbelly Award. He has written commissions for BBC Radio 4, been a Creative Associate at Nottingham Playhouse, and a writer in residence for Theatr Clwyd and Nottinghamshire Libraries. He is currently under commission from BBC Films.
