NYX are a London-based collaborative drone choir who come together to create ecstatic experiences for stage and screen

Inspired by a breadth of artists including composer Pauline Oliveros, singer-songwriter Enya, and experimental musicians such as Sunn O))), David Hykes’ Harmonic Choir and Dead Can Dance, NYX explore the entire spectrum of collective voice as an instrument to create music that responds to architecture and nature, amplified by spatial sound design.

They have produced and performed works for London Design Festival, London Fashion Week, Paris’ Pompidou Centre, King’s Place, the Barbican, and here at the Southbank Centre. Deep England, NYX’s collaboration with Gazelle Twin, was performed as a full-scale electronic opera in our Queen Elizabeth Hall in 2019 as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival. And in July last year they returned to our venues having been commissioned to develop a now 15 minute work with Manchester Collective’s Rakhi Singh and Sebastian Gainsborough (Vessel) as part of New Music Biennial.

‘This residency is incredible… Southbank Centre’s belief in what we do, and the generous support, gives our whole collective the courage to test out new ideas and create our best quality of work.’

Their Southbank Centre Studio will offer NYX space and time to work with music producer Vessel, somatic movement director Imogen Knight, and costume designer Tom Scutt to develop their new live show, which is set to be their biggest work to date. As they explain, ‘Design and performance are an important part of our work, but it can be hard to meaningfully explore the potential of these elements until we are in a performance venue and sharing with audiences.’

‘This residency is incredible as the Southbank Centre is giving us space, technical support and time to allow our designers and performers to collaborate as we conceive the show, which we hope will result in an ambitious and holistic experience for future audiences… Southbank Centre’s belief in what we do and the generous support gives our whole collective the courage to test out new ideas and create our best quality of work’.
