Mixing It Up: Gareth Cadwallader

Born in Swindon, and now living and working in London, Gareth Cadwallader has been described as a miniaturist painter of realist portals. He held his first solo show at London’s Josh Lilley Gallery in January 2019.

The artist has four works in the current Hayward Gallery exhibition Mixing It Up: Painting Today; Egg (2017-18), Shave (2019-21), Mountains (2020), and Smoker (Christ in the House of Mary and Martha) (2019).

In this video interview Cadwallader explains the benefit, to the viewer, of working on a small scale, and how the personal connection of viewing his work can tie into the subject of the respective pieces.

‘I painted them small out of necessity to begin with, as I couldn’t afford a studio, and I thought if I could limit my overheads as much as possible...’
