Her Majesty The Queen & the Southbank Centre

HRH Queen Elizabeth II in crown

Everyone at the Southbank Centre is greatly saddened by the death of our Patron, Her Majesty The Queen.

Her Majesty held a long association with the Southbank Centre that began right at the very start, with her official opening of our Royal Festival Hall in 1951. The Queen also officially opened the Hayward Gallery in 1968, and prior to that in 1967, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, named in her honour.

As well as officially opening our venues, The Queen was also a regular visitor and attendee at the Southbank Centre, particularly in the Royal Festival Hall’s formative years, as a look back through our archive shows.

A book of condolence for Her Majesty The Queen is to be placed in our Royal Festival Hall, Level 2 Foyer, Green Side, for anyone who wishes to add their own messages.
