Salvation & Damnation

Salvation and Damnation is the third part of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment’s Six Chapters of Enlightenment: six seasons exploring through music the golden age of science and philosophy that gave the orchestra its name.

These concerts feature music that is often uplifting, occasionally challenging, but always compelling. They explore questions that have resonated down the ages, about faith, doubt and legacy: How will I be judged? What will people think of me when I’m gone?

Unlocking these questions with the orchestra are a host of great artists, including singers Ian Bostridge and Iestyn Davies, violinist Alina Ibragimova and pianist Stephen Hough.

The OAE play on instruments authentic to the period the music was written. Each concert needs hours of research to understand performance tradition, recreating the sound-world the composers would have heard and making old music new. This orchestra’s lovingly-crafted performances are exuberant and energetic, with special efforts to help you discover how the times composers lived in influenced their music.

For over 30 years the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment has combined highbrow musicology with a tremendous sense of mischief
