Abnormally Funny People IRL
Join a gaggle of irreverent, internationally renowned funny people, most of whom are disabled, for an evening of laughs hosted by Simon Minty and Steve Best.
This performance brings together the talents of Steve Day, Harriet Dyer, Shaparak Khorsandi, Ria Lina and Tim Renkow for an evening of laugh-out-loud comedy from some of the best in the business.
Steve Day is a familiar voice on Radio 4. He has appeared many times on You and Yours, was a token man on Woman’s Hour and has featured in two radio dramas. Day has been described as ‘warm and witty’ by The Scotsman and received many other rave reviews while performing shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Chortle.co.uk gave him five stars for his one man show, Deafy’s Island Discs, a show the Sunday Times called ‘funny and moving’.
Harriet Dyer has been a full time comic since 2013. You might know her from Rosie Jones’ Disability Comedy Extravaganza, Comedy Central Live and The Russell Howard Hour. Dyer was a main writer for both seasons of Jon Richardson’s Channel Hopping, wrote and starred in Meet the Richardsons, and was the winner of the Neurodiversity Representation Award at Edinburgh Fringe 2022.
Shaparak Khorsandi is a comedian, author, speaker and advocate for human rights, established as one of the UK’s finest comedians with her sell-out Edinburgh show Asylum Speaker. Despite the basis for the show being her experiences as a child refugee fleeing Iran, Khorsandi’s sensitive yet witty exploration of these events created an instant comedy smash hit. It also led to the publication of A Beginner’s Guide to Acting English, her bestselling literary debut.
Fearless, provocative and very funny, Ria Lina is a Filipina comedian and a hugely admired talent in the comedy industry. She was diagnosed with autism as an adult and has subsequently spoken about her journey on panels and shows across the BBC, Sky and academic organisations. She has appeared on Live at the Apollo, Have I Got News For You?, Mock the Week and Celebrity Mastermind among others.
Tim Renkow is a BAFTA-nominated actor, writer and comedian. He co-created, and co-wrote and starred in BBC narrative comedy series Jerk for two series. It was received well by audiences and critics alike – The Guardian said, ‘Tim Renkow has created a Larry David for a new generation’. In November 2020, Renkow was selected as a BAFTA Breakthrough UK artist for his work as a writer-performer.
