London Is Love Meets the Archive

Part of Heritage & Archive

Get to know the people featured in our exhibition of photographs by artist Liz Johnson Artur at a behind-the-scenes display in our Archive Studio.

Displayed around our site in late 2019, London Is Love is a photography project by Johnson Artur celebrating the diverse and pioneering communities in the London borough of Lambeth and Southwark.

Johnson Artur’s work reveals the ordinary, vibrant and subtle nuances of south London life, highlighting family, friendship, love and vulnerability.

London Is Love shared the experiences of our neighbours AQEM (Association for Queer Ethnic Minorities), Archbishop’s Park Gardening Club, Black Cowboy Coffee, Bookmongers of Brixton, BORN N BREAD, Ebony Horse Club, Effra Hall Tavern, Positive Ageing at Blackfriars Settlement and The Chateau.

This display at our Archive Studio features personal objects, and stories from group members on their involvement in the project and what they love most about south London.

Oral histories have also been collected as part of the project for Southbank Centre Archive Studio.

Liz Johnson Artur, a Russian-Ghanaian artist based in London, has taken photographs across Europe, America, Africa and the Caribbean for more than three decades.

Since arriving in London in 1991, Johnson Artur has been building up the ongoing series Black Balloon Archive, photographing the lives of black people and communities from across the African diaspora.
