Belle Chen

This event has been cancelled as we are currently closed due to the coronavirus crisis.

Unbound by tradition, the pianist evokes locations from around the world in an immersive performance combining prepared piano, soundscapes and perfumes.

With bespoke perfumes shared with the audience at key moments, coupled with Belle Chen’s personal and engaging commentary, her performances are a new way to experience music.

From the Gare du Nord of Paris to tropical Java, the spice markets of Istanbul to outback Australia, the programme takes the audience on a multi-sensory journey around the world, sharing some of the special moments experienced by Chen and her collaborators.

The programme features works by Francis Poulenc, Federico Mompou, Fazil Say, Domenico Scarlatti and Maurice Ravel, juxtaposed with Chen's dazzling contemporary classical composition for prepared piano.

Handpicked by Brian Eno as one to watch, Belle Chen expands the language of classical music across multiple genres.

Chen first gained attention in UK's art music scene with her self-released EP Listen, London in 2014, in which she juxtaposed classical repertoire with field recordings taken around London.

Albums Mediterranean Sounds, Mademoiselle and Departure followed – each with a distinct artistic vision.

Her releases have earned Chen plaudits from industry heavyweights including James Rhodes, Max Reinhardt and BBC Radio 3.
