Meshell Ndegeocello

Part of Grace Jones' Meltdown

Mercurial and masterful, the authentic musical thinker and neo-soul pioneer brings her warm, fat and melodic groove to everything she does.

Since her 1993 debut Plantation Lullabies, Meshell Ndegeocello has led her fans to expect the unexpected, taking forays into spoken word, R&B, jazz, hip-hop and rock.

She’s survived the best and worst of what a career in music has to offer, choosing originality over genre, longevity over celebrity, and musical truths over musical trends.

Called ‘one of music's least predictable stars’ by NPR, she has received ten Grammy nominations and appeared alongside artists including the Rolling Stones, Madonna and Chaka Khan.

Living through the boom and bust of the industry, she’s emerged just as she entered – unequivocally herself, creating work that comes from a lyrical, spiritual search for love, justice, respect, resolution and happiness.

The first woman to be featured on the cover of Bass Player magazine, she credits Sting, Jaco Pastorius, Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett and Stevie Wonder as her bass-playing influences.

An uncompromising artist, Ndegeocello’s investigations of sound afford not just a new musical experience but remind us to defy the narrow expectations of sounds and structures for black artists and black music overall.

Over the last 25 years Ndegeocello has merged soul, rock, and hip-hop to make a kind of R&B that is at once cerebral and interstellar.
