Full Circle

An award-winning community opera project inspired by the real-life story of a Newham resident who arrived as a young refugee.

He shared his story with hundreds of young people from 15 schools in the London borough of Newham at creative workshops, where the young people created five original songs reflecting the modern-day struggles of finding your way.

Rapper and spoken word artist Mohammed Yahya and poet Laila Sumpton have also worked with children across Newham to explore themes of refugee journeys, gang violence, and place-making to create a new narrations for the event.

Full Circle features more than 200 children and young people from the borough and is part of Refugee Week 2019.

Full Circle is a collaboration between Newham Music, Music For Youth, Lister Community School, Counterpoints Arts, John Barber and Hazel Gould.

The project recently received the Music Teacher Award for Excellence in the Outstanding Musical Initiative Category.

Refugee Week is coordinated by Counterpoints Arts.
