Unclassified Live: Daniel Avery, Rafiq Bhatia & Caroline Shaw

Part of Contemporary Edit

Composer Caroline Shaw’s Violin Concerto Lo was called ‘the sonic double of a sultry summer night’ by The New Yorker.

See her perform it in a concert with music from boundary-breaking musicians Daniel Avery and Rafiq Bhatia.

BBC Concert Orchestra debuts new arrangements of Daniel Avery's work orchestrated by Quinta, and composer/guitarist Bhatia accompanied by drummer Ian Chang and bassist Jackson Hill perform orchestral reversions of his material.

In a trio of concerts inspired by BBC Radio 3’s Unclassified programme, Elizabeth Alker presents music by a visionary generation of composers and performers who break down boundaries and fuse classical music with a whole range of other genres, including electronica, jazz, ambient and pop.

André de Ridder conducts the BBC Concert Orchestra for an electrifying evening of music going beyond the boundaries of orchestral performance.

Electronic music producer and DJ Avery released second album Song for Alpha, described as ‘majestic, cavernous techno’ by The Guardian, in 2018.

Bhatia is a New York-based composer and guitarist. His audacious first album as a producer, Breaking English, sets out to challenge existing musical vocabulary with a language of its own.

Shaw is a vocalist, violinist, composer, and producer who performs in solo and collaborative projects.

She was the youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2013 for Partita for 8 Voices, written for the Grammy-winning Roomful of Teeth, of which she is a member.
