Open Studio: LCO x Hatis Noit

Part of Purcell Sessions

See behind the scenes at an open studio session with Erased Tapes artist Hatis Noit and London Contemporary Orchestra ahead of their performance.

The Japanese vocal performer’s EP Illogical Dance, released earlier this year, creates unique song-worlds with transcendent vocal interpretations that at once deconstruct and recombine Western classical, Japanese folk and nature’s own ambient atmosphere. Inspired by gagaku – Japanese classical music – and operatic styles, Bulgarian and Gregorian chanting, to avant-garde and pop vocalists, the record was co-produced by Haruhisa Tanaka and Björk collaborators Matmos.

The London Contemporary Orchestra is one of the UK's leading contemporary ensembles, known in particular for its focus on collaboration. They have performed live and recorded with artists such as Frank Ocean, Jed Kurzel, Jonny Greenwood, Steve Reich, Justice, Terry Riley, Thom Yorke, Mica Levi, Actress, Beck, William Basinski and Richard Reed Parry.

Each session in the Purcell Sessions series comprises a workshop where composers and players work together to test and develop new methods, followed by an evening performance of the works created alongside pieces from which the artists have taken inspiration.
