Open Studio: LCO x Rival Consoles

Part of Purcell Sessions

Get a glimpse of how music is made in an open studio session where Erased Tapes artist Rival Consoles and London Contemporary Orchestra experiment together ahead of the evening's performance.

Ryan Lee West, aka Rival Consoles, explores the organic, atmospheric side to electronica. His latest album Persona, inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s film of the same name, investigates themes of in-between states. The image in the opening credits of a child reaching out to touch a woman’s face on a screen, shifting between one face and another, inspired an exploration of the persona, the difference between how we see ourselves and how others see us.

The London Contemporary Orchestra is one of the UK's leading contemporary ensembles, known in particular for its focus on collaboration. They have performed live and recorded with artists such as Frank Ocean, Jed Kurzel, Jonny Greenwood, Steve Reich, Justice, Terry Riley, Thom Yorke, Mica Levi, Actress, Beck, William Basinski and Richard Reed Parry.

Each session in the Purcell Sessions series comprises a workshop where composers and players work together to test and develop new methods, followed by an evening performance of the works created alongside pieces from which the artists have taken inspiration.
