Simon Trpceski: Orchestral Manoeuvres on a Piano

Part of Classical Season 2020/21

Simon Trpceski presents an intriguing selection of symphonic music realised on the piano, culminating in one of the greatest musical stories ever told.

He proves that the piano can be as mighty as the orchestra with an evening of vivid tales told in blazing Technicolor.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade is a feast of musical storytelling, as atmospheric as it is captivating.

Paul Gilson’s arrangement of this Russian telling of the stories of The Arabian Nights harbours all the orchestral version’s most potent pictures – the rolling sea, the crashing shipwrecks, the wild fantasies.

Few composers have unrolled their imaginations as Rimsky-Korsakov does in Sheherazade.

At the beginning of the evening, Trpceski plays Beethoven, transferring two of the composer’s most hypnotic symphonic movements from orchestra to piano.

Beethoven’s Symphony No.7 is founded on percussive rhythmic power. Its second movement Allegretto is an inexorable march that immortalises the composer’s ideals of fortitude and aspiration.

As well as Beethoven the revolutionary, we hear from Beethoven the decorative craftsman. In his 32 Variations in C minor, the composer plays with traditions from the Baroque, conjuring up a charming improvisatory game.
