ArsLonga Piano Trio

Part of Classical Season 2018/19

The ArsLonga Piano Trio presents works by Grieg, Mendelssohn and Smetana in a programme drawing on the rich diversity of the Romantic era.

The tinges of sadness in Grieg's single-movement Andante con moto are balanced by the impassioned, grief-stricken G minor Piano Trio that Smetana composed in 1855 shortly after the death of his young and musically gifted daughter Bedriska.

In between, Mendelssohn's Trio No.1, while still in a minor key, is imbued with the artless lyricism, effervescence and musical vibrancy that led Schumann to describe it as the most important piano trio of the age and one that would delight audiences for years to come.

The ArsLonga Piano Trio was formed in 2016 by the Norwegian violinist Birgitte Staernes together with the French cellist Hélène Dautry and pianist Sandra Chamoux.

The ensemble has been praised for its performances at festivals in Europe and at the Salle Cortot in Paris, and the 2017 recording of the Brahms' sonatas for cello and piano by Hélène Dautry and Sandra Chamoux on the Lyrinx label has likewise been critically acclaimed. The Trio is recording the trios of Chausson and Saint-Saëns for release this year.
