Stockhausen: Für kommende Zeiten

Part of Stockhausen: Cosmic Prophet

Für kommende Zeiten (For Times to Come) was composed in the late 1960s and follows Stockhausen’s holistic aesthetics.

The composer himself describes it as ‘intuitive music’, that is, music produced primarily from the intuition rather than the intellect of the performer.

After years spent creating new sounds out of the smallest elements, pioneering electro-acoustics and assembling everything into vast and complex musical structures, Stockhausen moved in the opposite direction during the late 1960s with a series of pieces that tried to bypass the intellect altogether.

Für kommende Zeiten comes from this period of intuitive music. The score consists of instructive texts that allow for improvisation and stimulate the performers towards new musical horizons.

This performance takes in a selection of texts from the piece, spanning a performance in two parts for piano, cello, percussion, harp and electric keyboards.

Formed in 1995, Apartment House is one of the world’s leading groups for experimental and avant-garde music, equally at home at classical music and crossover venues, art galleries and international festivals. Their sold-out John Cage concert at Queen Elizabeth Hall in 2011 earned them a Royal Philharmonic Society Award for an outstanding contribution to Chamber Music and Song.
