JACK Quartet & Colin Currie

Part of Classical Season 2019/20

Sticks and strings and the sounds of the 21st-century – two champions of contemporary music collaborate on recent and new works from the last decade.

Simon Holt begins the night with horses, in a work inspired by the art of dressage.

Each movement in Quadriga takes its name from the ‘airs above the ground’, a style of refined dressage movement where this piece lives, in floating forms and loosely tethered ideas.

Starry Night (after the painting) turns Van Gogh’s vivid brushstrokes into sheer audible force; Steve Martland’s contagious rhythmic energy invites the listener to join him in a nocturnal dance beneath these stars.

Through veiled harmonic screams, Clara Iannotta uncovers unfamiliar sonic territories in A Failed Entertainment, her first quartet for strings seasoned with handheld percussive trinkets.

Finally comes a piece from Andy Akiho, whose bright and optimistic harmonies charged with bristling rhythmic undercurrents end the concert with a brand new work for string quartet and percussion.

The JACK Quartet are ‘superheroes of the new music world’ (Boston Globe), who have been fearlessly championing new work across the globe since 2005.

They perform regularly with Southbank Centre Associate Artist Colin Currie, most recently in London during the 2018 BBC Proms.
