Borodin Quartet

Part of Classical Season 2019/20

Experience Borodin and Shostakovich as they should be heard, with one of Russia and the world’s finest string quartets.

The Borodin Quartet have recorded what many consider the definitive interpretations of Borodin’s ravishing second string quartet and Shostakovich’s bravura Piano Quintet.

The Russian quartet has a 70-year history, and had a close relationship with Shostakovich, playing for and with the composer. It seems that Shostakovich considered them unequalled advocates for his chamber music.

Opening the concert, Borodin’s popular chamber piece is known for its sultry, oriental third movement.

To follow, there’s a chance to hear extracts from Shostakovich’s film score The Girlfriends, for string quartet, trumpet and piano: lyrical, appealing music written as a sensitive soundtrack to a 1936 Soviet drama.

Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet is chamber music on a grand scale, forceful and emotionally complex. At its premiere, audiences gave it an ecstatic standing ovation.

The Borodins are joined by pianist Alexei Volodin, whose performance here in 2013 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra garnered rave reviews.

The Guardian wrote, ‘Alexei Volodin was the sensational soloist – a hard-hitting, edgy performance in which he played with staggering technique and furious accuracy.’

Of Russian trumpet maestro Sergei Nakariakov, the San Francisco Chronicle has said, ‘He plays the trumpet the way the rest of us breathe – if we are lucky.’
