Clare Hammond: Mendelssohn, Fauré & Gershwin

Part of Classical Season 2019/20

An unfairly neglected composer is at the heart of an imaginative selection for piano in Clare Hammond’s International Piano Series debut.

She opens with a selection of Mendelssohn’s lyrical Songs Without Words and Beethoven’s early C major Sonata No.3.

The second half brings music by Lili Boulanger, whose significance as a composer is now becoming recognised some 100 years after her early death.

Two Nocturnes by Boulanger’s teacher Fauré follow.

Either side of these poignant French works sit two contrasting virtuosic pieces – three movements from Albéniz’ evocative Iberia and American pianist Earl Wild’s extraordinary reworkings of three Gershwin songs.

The Royal Philharmonic Society's 2016 Young Artist of the Year, Clare Hammond is already renowned for her virtuosity and musical intelligence.

Tonight marks her International Piano Series debut.
