Saleem Ashkar: Brahms, Schumann & Chopin

Part of Classical Season 2019/20

Trace the friendships and romances that inspired composers in a concert of music shaped by relationships.

Ashkar opens his recital with Brahms’ sweeping, dramatic Op.79 Rhapsodies (influenced by his friend Elisabeth von Herzogenberg) and Schumann’s mercurial Kreisleriana (featuring a theme by the composer’s future wife Clara).

Debussy wrote of his first set of Images: ‘I believe that these three pieces will take their place in the piano literature, on the left hand of Schumann, or the right hand of Chopin.’

Fittingly, Ashkar ends the evening with the latter two of Chopin’s four Ballades, which are amongst his most intense compositions, and are said to have been inspired by Polish writer Adam Mickiewicz.

Since making his Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 22, Saleem Ashkar has gone on to appear with orchestras such as the Wiener Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw, London Symphony, Mariinsky and Leipzig Gewandhaus.

He makes his International Piano Series debut with a programme of works which were either dedicated to, inspired by or include input from other composers, performers and writers.

He captures just the right balance of clarity, swiftness of attack, poetry and élan: every note shines with sun-reflecting clarity as the finales whirl along
