RCMJD Chamber and Symphony Orchestras

Part of Classical Season 2019/20

This event is cancelled as we are currently closed due to the coronavirus crisis.

Two astonishing young orchestras trumpet the talent of the Royal College of Music Junior Department.

The department’s flagship ensembles are directed by Christopher Hirons and Jacques Cohen.

The RCMJD trains musicians aged eight to 18, providing lessons in instruments, voice and composition supported by chamber music, orchestra, choir and musicianship classes.

Some 350 students attend the college each Saturday, travelling from as far afield as Tyneside, Manchester, York, Ireland, Germany and Spain.

Students have recently featured at the BBC Proms as well as the Royal Albert Hall, St James’s Piccadilly, Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall, Sadlers Wells Theatre, 606 Club, The Globe, the House of Lords, Cadogan Hall and at Sandringham for Royal College of Music President, HRH The Prince of Wales.

Orchestral training is an integral part of the RCMJD curriculum with no fewer than five orchestras meeting weekly at the College to rehearse.

The Chamber and Symphony Orchestras have represented the College at such venues as St John’s Smith Square, Cadogan Hall, several City Livery Halls, St James’s Piccadilly, Clarendon Muse and the Royal Albert Hall.

Twenty three members of the Symphony Orchestra are also current members of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

Their ages range between 16 and 18 and most will progress to conservatoires to continue their musical studies.
