Mozart & Haydn: Celebrating Genius

Part of Classical Season 2018/19

In its 70th year, the UK’s longest-established chamber orchestra, London Mozart Players, delights with the music of Classical pioneers Haydn and Mozart.

Directing from the piano as his 18th century counterparts would have, Conductor Laureate Howard Shelley leads the London Mozart Players in a programme highlighting the genius of these two composers.

A generation apart, Haydn was the generous mentor, with Mozart his appreciative pupil. Their friendship, forged through their mutual passion for musical innovation, transcended jealous rivalry. Rather than compare the two, we should simply celebrate their work.

Showcasing musicianship and ensemble playing at its best, the LMP deliver music to feed the soul, with two majestic symphonies to open and close this afternoon of classical gems – Haydn’s Symphony No.95, one of his 12 London Symphonies (perhaps modelled on Mozart’s Jupiter), and Mozart’s Symphony No.35 in D, Haffner.

Relax into the heart-melting core of this concert when Shelley takes to the piano to perform Mozart’s sublime Piano Concerto No.23, followed by a rare performance of Hummel’s Concertino in G: Shelley is one of this underrated composer’s greatest exponents.

Pianist, conductor and recording artist Shelley has enjoyed a distinguished career since his highly acclaimed London debut in 1971. His long association with the LMP has evolved into an intuitive partnership on the concert platform.
