Sibelius: States of Independence

Part of Classical Season 2018/19

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment rounds off its Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness season with the definitive musical celebration of freedom and liberty.

Even in its own time, Sibelius’ Second Symphony was hailed as a statement against Russian occupation and a proud assertion of Finnish national identity.

An extremely powerful piece with a stirring finale, it played its part in paving the way for Finland’s independence in 1917, and helped make Sibelius a national hero.

Vladimir Jurowski is joined by violinist Alina Ibragimova for an evening also featuring the music of Elgar and Richard Strauss.
