Ode to Joy

Part of Classical Season 2020/21

A masterpiece created especially for London comes home with the London Philharmonic Orchestra on Beethoven’s 250th anniversary.

‘Oh you millions, I embrace you – here’s a kiss for all the world!’

Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is more than just the natural climax of any Beethoven anniversary celebration.

It’s one of those pieces that transcends its era, and with an all-star team of soloists and a conductor with an unmistakable sense of theatre, it should have something uniquely compelling to say on this occasion.

Meanwhile, Beethoven’s delightful, rarely heard Choral Fantasy is like seeing the Ninth Symphony taking baby steps.

The concert opens in a blaze of glory from Beethoven’s hero Handel: like the Ninth Symphony, a masterpiece that was created especially for London.
