Speakers Corner Quartet: exclusive studio session
Ahead of their appearance at Chaka Khan’s Meltdown, we caught up with South London favourites Speakers Corner Quartet at Lewisham’s The Room Studios.
Beginning life as the house band for Brixton-based spoken word and hip-hop session Speakers Corner, the four-piece have since become the heartbeat of South London music. Never straying too far from their roots, the last 15 years have seen them grow and collaborate with a host of musicians and performers including Sampha, Kae Tempest and Shabaka Hutchings.
In this video, introduced by flautist Biscuit, he and the rest of the quartet – Kwake Bass on drums, Raven Bush on violin, Peter Bennie on bass – offer up an 11 minute jam session as they prepare for their gig at Chaka Khan’s Meltdown in June.
Speakers Corner Quartet join forces with the 35-piece Guildhall Session Orchestra to present brand new compositions and some reworked favourites in a special performance as part of Chaka Khan’s Meltdown, here at the Southbank Centre in June.
