Matthew Barney in conversation
On show at Hayward Gallery from May to July 2021, Redoubt was Matthew Barney’s first solo museum presentation in the UK in over a decade.
In an accompaniment to what The Observer called, ‘a 21st-century version of the American sublime’, the artist recently joined Hayward Gallery Curator Cliff Lauson for a virtual in conversation about the exhibition.
The pair discuss how Redoubt, its film, sculptures and electroplates, evolved; the exhibition as a ‘portrait of place’; and how Barney approaches and combines his roles as artist, director and performer in his film work.
‘I tend to decide to put myself into the film when I can see that there’s a task I know I want to carry out, or I feel like I could best to carry out.’
