Katy Hessel of The Great Women Artists on Bridget Riley
Katy Hessel is a curator, art historian and writer, whose goal is to readdress the gender imbalance in the art world by reinserting women of all backgrounds back into the canon of art history.
At the end of 2019, Hessel, who is perhaps best known for running Instagram account The Great Women Artists, visited Hayward Gallery’s Bridget Riley exhibition, the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of the artist’s work to date. In this film, Hessel talks about what it is to view Riley’s works in person, and why she considers Bridget Riley to be one of the greatest artists of all-time.
