Jyll Bradley introduces The Hop
The Hop is an interactive commission by Jyll Bradley which links the urban landscape of the Southbank Centre to the hop gardens of Kent.
We caught up with the artist, to get an introduction from her to her sculptural work and its origin and inspiration. Constructed in vibrant green and blue plexiglass and wood, this abstract interpretation of a hop garden, and the way hops are grown, exists to tell the story of Lambeth residents who in years past would leave London each year to farm the hops of the Kent countryside.
In this video Bradley expands on this, and also highlights her own favourite aspects and sight-lines presented by the installation. Whilst Hayward Gallery Director, Ralph Rugoff highlights how the installation constantly changes, both in relation to its environment, and the viewer’s perspective.
‘It’s a piece that you’ve got to explore, but there’s so much to look at that if you spend some time, it will reward your attention’.
Ralph Rugoff, Hayward Gallery Director
