Emerging Music Professionals
Want to work in the music industry but don’t know where to start?
In a partnership with Big Dada and Ninja Tune, our Emerging Music Professionals collective offers free training and paid work experience to help you build a career in music.
Ninja Tune is a south London-born, Lambeth-based independent record label founded in 1990. It’s grown to be one of the major actors in the London underground scene, releasing music from acts such as Bonobo, Bicep, Mr Scruff, The Cinematic Orchestra and Young Fathers.
Big Dada is a Ninja Tune sub-record label run by Black, POC and minority ethnic people for Black, POC and minority ethnic artists.
The Southbank Centre is the UK’s biggest arts centre, with a contemporary music programme that spans across genre and time. It’s presented historic performances by the likes of Nina Simone, and continues to host fresh new electronic acts like Loraine James, pop superstars like M.I.A, and grime legends like Giggs.
Together the two labels are teaming up with the Southbank Centre to run a new course for Emerging Music Professionals.
Are you passionate about music? Do you have an ear for upcoming artists and believe that you can influence the musical tastes of your generation?
We’re looking for ten emerging music professionals resident in Lambeth aged 18 – 24 to learn basic skills and gain practical experience to launch a career behind the scenes in the music industry.
We particularly encourage applicants from underrepresented and marginalised communities and young people who identify as Black, Asian or Ethnically Diverse, LGBTQI+, disabled or neurodiverse, and from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
With generous support from Lambeth ELEVATE, the intensive foundation course offers a mix of training and paid work experience. Meet record executives, artists, promoters and programmers as you learn about record label structures and event producing in the live music industry.
Through practical workshops, compile a toolkit to understand workflow and productivity, and the different terminology, tools and assets that are key to working in this industry – everything from A&R to marketing, budgets, logistics and artist and venue liaison.
Then put your new knowledge to the test, working creatively as a group to put out and promote a music release under guidance from Ninja Tune and Big Dada, and programme and produce a live music event at the Southbank Centre.
The course runs from October 2022 to May 2023. If you want to apply, please fill out the form at the bottom of this page by 5pm, Monday 3 October 2022.
