YONAKA at Robert Smith's Meltdown

Described as ‘one of alternative rock’s most exciting new names’, YONAKA have already been earmarked as a band to watch. Purveyors of ferocious live shows the Brighton-based four-piece offer up a blend of head-banging rock, slick hip-hop and the lo-fi of grime.

Shunning genre-boundaries is something Robert Smith has always been known for, so it’s fitting perhaps to see YONAKA feature on The Cure frontman’s Meltdown line-up. On Sunday 17 June, YONAKA supported The Libertines at Royal Festival hall and their lead singer Theresa Jarvis spoke to us about the loud, aggressive, empowering nature of the sound.

YONAKA | Robert Smith's Meltdown

I’m releasing these things that have either hurt me, or I feel passionate about. In that sense I want to help everyone who hears it. I want them, if they can relate to the song, to sing it along with me.
