Whyte Horses share their musical inspirations

Indie psych? Psychedelic pop? Defining a band which exists more as a concept than a a physical presence is no easy task. The brainchild of DJ and record-label founder Dom Thomas, Whyte Horses have always been an ideas first, music second type of band, and in September they bring their latest live musical stream of consciousness to Southbank Centre as Whyte Horses Experience.

Ahead of that performance and to give a flavour of what Whyte Horses are about, Thomas has kindly curated this playlist of his musical inspirations, as he explains below.

‘Here’s a small collection of songs which have been pivotal in inspiring me to pursue a career in music. I can vividly remember the first time I heard Milton Nascimento’s Tudo o Que Voce Podia Ser; there really is no other song that it’s comparable to, when the drums kicked in and the chorus took off it was like a door was flung open to a new world of music’.

‘Songs like these don’t come along that often and when they do they leave a firm impression on me. To me they are devoid of pastiche and seem to live on their own plane. There is some kind of cosmic DNA in the things I’m drawn to, I’m still trying to figure out what that is’.

Whyte Horses perform alongside special guest artists including La Roux, members of The Go! Team and Melanie Pain - with more to be announced - as part of a special gig at Southbank Centre on Thursday 13 September.
