Watch our Being A Man festival round up

For three days in November, we welcomed speakers, writers and thinkers from across the world to Southbank Centre as we explored what it means to be a man in 2017. The talks and discussions of Being A Man festival took a closer look at the constructs and conceptions that shape the male identity and the notions of boyhood and manhood.

Being a Man 2017 | Festival Round Up

In this short video summary of the festival we see and hear clips from some of our headline speakers, including actor and author Robert Webb, comedian Simon Amstell, and writer and activist Kevin Powell as they each address the question of ‘what makes a man?’ in their own distinct ways.

We also hear from Southbank Centre artistic director Jude Kelly, who offers some telling statistics on men, and some of the many hundreds of people who attended the weekend festival; to get their views on what it means to be a man.

It’s kind of meaningless isn’t it, a ‘man’, a ‘woman’. I don’t feel like a man when I wake up, I just feel like I want porridge.
Simon Amstell, speaking at Being A Man

Being A Man is our annual festival exploring the challenges and pressures of masculinity in the 21st century.
