In this year’s Being A Man festival we welcomed a host of internationally renowned writers, thinkers, speakers, actors and to Southbank Centre as we asked what makes a man? Our weekend of talks and discussions touched on everything from political power to porn, music to #metoo.

Among the picks of the festival were comedian and author Robert Webb discussing his book on growing up and the constructs and confines of male identity, How Not To Be A Boy; American activist and writer Kevin Powell speaking on a boy’s journey into manhood; a look at the contrasting masculinities of the world’s leading politicians in From Trump to Trudeau: Masculinity in Power; and comedian Simon Amstell in conversation on his book Help

We have been taught to define manhood as power, and privilege and domination over each other and domination over women and girls and manhood is rooted in violence and hate and division and destroying bridges.
Kevin Powell, speaking at Being A Man
