Lawrence Power holding his viola

Lawrence Power

An internationally-acclaimed viola player, Lawrence Power is widely heralded for his richness of sound, technical mastery and his passionate advocacy for new music.

Since making his debut with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the start of the 21st century, he has gone on to perform as a soloist with a great number of leading orchestras. They include the London Symphony, BBC Symphony, English Chamber, Scottish Chamber, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Bergen Philharmonic, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Verbier Festival Chamber, New Zealand Symphony, Lucerne Festival Strings and Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.

A great advocate for the viola, Power established the Viola Commissioning Circle with the purpose of broadening the instrument’s repertoire. Its creation has led to a substantial new body of works for the viola from leading contemporary composers.

As a chamber musician Power regularly performs at Verbier, Salzburg, Aspen, and other festivals, where he has appeared with such artists as Steven Isserlis, Nicholas Alstaedt, Simon Crawford-Phillips, Vilde Frang, Maxim Vengerov and Joshua Bell. He is a current member of the Nash Ensemble and in 2023 was awarded the Cobbett Medal for services to chamber music.

Power became a Southbank Centre Resident Artist ahead of our Autumn/Winter 2024/25 programme.
